Governor-General visits Casuarina

The Governor-General of Australia His Excellency, General the Honourable Sir Peter Cosgrove AK MC (Retd) has visited Casuarina campus to meet students and staff.
Sir Peter and Lady Cosgrove were welcomed by Vice-Chancellor Professor Simon Maddocks and toured part of the Yellow precinct including the School of Environment laboratories, the Northern Institute and also visited the Library to meet with Student Ambassadors.
Staff from the Research Institute for the Environment and Livelihoods gave research presentations on the migration patterns of barramundi, the microbial quality of artisanal shellfish harvest and the potential of wild rice as a wild harvest “bush tucker” product in collaboration with Indigenous communities. His Excellency suggested that, when ready, he would like to see the native rice on the menu at Government House.
Northern Institute staff presented work on heat stress and Indigenous community involvement in biosecurity.
During his visit His Excellency said that it had been a pleasure to return to the university where he had been honoured with an Honorary Doctorate in 2001.
