Charles Darwin University students are being encouraged to broaden their educational horizons by taking up international student exchange opportunities.

CDU has been awarded funding by the Australian Government under the International Student Exchange Program initiative, giving students the opportunity to study at a partner university in Canada, the USA or Germany.

Successful applicants are eligible for a $5000 subsidy to assist with travel and living costs.

The program enables continuing undergraduate students in most disciplines to undertake one or two semesters of study for credit towards their CDU degree.

Second-year Bachelor of Education (Primary Teaching) student Charlotte Cooper said she was overwhelmingly happy when she learned she was successful in securing a place at Mount Royal University in Calgary, Canada.

“I hope to be able to do a practical placement at a local school to learn about how the education system works in Canada,” Charlotte said.

“I may even be able to integrate some of this knowledge into my own teaching practices after I graduate.

“Broadening my perspective, gaining life experience, being immersed in campus culture and meeting new people are some of the other reasons I chose to apply for the program.

“The cooler climate will also be a welcome change from the Darwin heat.”

Charlotte will begin her semester-long exchange in September this year, and will spend some time travelling in North America before returning to Darwin to continue her studies at Casuarina campus in 2015.
