Charles Darwin University’s online learning team travelled to the United States with Vice-Chancellor Professor Simon Maddocks recently to receive Blackboard’s highest award for its Massive Open Online Course (MOOC) “Charles Darwin, Evolution and Tropical Australia”.

Announced earlier this year at the annual Blackboard Catalyst Awards, CDU received a 2014 Exemplary Course Award and a Directors Choice for Courses with Distinction for its first MOOC.

Professor Maddocks said it was fantastic recognition for the calibre of production by the CDU MOOC team, and together with an award for Student Impact for another CDU course, affirmed its place as a world leader in an increasingly competitive on-line space.

“Receiving this international award is exceptional recognition of CDU’s dedication to innovative on-line learning with thousands of institutions competing in this space,” Professor Maddocks said.

The award-winning MOOC is currently running for the second time. Participants can take a journey through Charles Darwin's life and discoveries via an interactive timeline and map chronicling his voyage on the HMS Beagle, as they made their way around the world, and watch animation videos on natural selection.

Enrolment is free and course participants have access to highly engaging interactive video and innovative media, as well as being able to participate in live webinar discussions featuring the inaugural and current Charles Darwin Scholar, Professor Janet Browne from Harvard University.
