The first academic in the Northern Territory to receive the prestigious John Monash Scholarship is encouraging fellow Territorians to apply.

Dr Jacqui Baker said the scholarship she received in 2004 helped further her academic career and she is now a South-east Asian politics lecturer at Murdoch University in Western Australia.

Sir John Monash Foundation CEO Reneta Bernarde said the scholarship was awarded to applicants who advocated and worked for a better Australia, both domestically and on a global scale.

“We know from scholars like Jacqui that Northern Territory applicants have a lot to offer,” Ms Bernarde said.

“The diverse fields in which our scholars study ensure that all facets of Australian life will be addressed.”

The scholarship is valued at $60,000 a year for up to three years and assists successful applicants in undertaking postgraduate studies at the world’s leading universities.

Applicants must be Australian citizens who have completed or are completing an undergraduate course from an Australian university and are planning to take postgraduate study overseas in 2016.

Applications for the John Monash Scholarship close on 12 August, 2015. For more information visit W: johnmonash.com/award-application/
