Ancient techniques may relieve symptoms

Senior Lecturer in Nursing Dr Benjamin Tan has been given the green light for research into the use of acupressure to relieve symptoms of fatigue, insomnia and depression in breast cancer patients.

Dr Tan said the one-year pilot study would involve researchers from Hong Kong, mainland China and Edith Cowan University in Western Australia.

“I’m interested in using evidence-based complementary medicine, particularly ear and body acupressure, to manage treatment-related symptoms in patients with cancer and chronic illnesses,” Dr Tan said.

“I have previously used similar research to successfully develop and evaluate an ear acupressure protocol to help relevant patients better manage chemotherapy-induced nausea and vomiting and improve quality of life.”

Dr Tan said he would invite early-stage breast cancer patients to participate in his study in the latter half of the year.
