Five of Central Australia’s most promising young musicians have been selected to compete in the Battle of the School Bands final in Darwin this week.

Four of them are enrolled in contemporary music courses at Charles Darwin University’s Alice Springs campus.

Music lecturer Francis Diatschenko said he was delighted to see that Central Australia still had an “embarrassment of riches” when it came to musical talent.

“The judges were truly impressed by the sophistication of the song writing,” he said.

“We saw and heard some great original songs that demonstrated a high degree of creativity and expression.”

Mr Diatschenko said the winner in the band category was “Studio 2”, comprising Jenaya Allen (vocals), Chloe Daniels (keyboard) and Steven Wasaga (drums). The joint winners in the solo category were Levi Rothwell and Keahnu Bishop.

Alice Springs-based CDU music students have a proud history at Battle of the School bands finals with Michael Lindsey, Elsie Lange, and Micah Rothwell all having won in previous years.

The Battle of the School Bands final will be held in Darwin on Friday 10 April in conjunction with the National Youth Week “Launch”. The category winners will be invited to perform at the Top End’s BASSINTHEGRASS music festival next month.
