VET student sets gold standard in beauty competitionBy Patrick Nelson Charles Darwin University VET student Taylor Chalker has won WorldSkills gold at the regional beauty therapy competition at Alice Springs campus. Diploma of Beauty Therapy student Ella Adami won the silver medal and fellow student Janice Goh (Cert III) the bronze in what was a pressure-cooker competition that gave rise to some “extremely high standards”. Beauty Therapy lecturer Deb Street said that each of the five competitors performed strongly with only a few points separating first from fifth. “The result confirms that we have some excellent beauty therapy practitioners in Alice Springs as well as some outstanding emerging talent,” Ms Street said. “They demonstrated great skill, knowledge and a passion for their craft, which augurs well for the future of the industry in the Red Centre. “I congratulate each of the medallists, and especially Taylor, a mother of two who returned to CDU this year as a Certificate IV student to add to the knowledge and skills she developed here a few years ago.” Ms Street said each competitor was required to complete a set of five tasks on a model and within a set time. These included a facial, an eyelash tint / eyebrow wax, a leg wax, evening make-up and a French manicure. And in Palmerston, Milla Tulloch won the WorldSkills hairdressing competition from Trudi McKenzie and Keelin Marsh. |
