CDU represented on national student body

By Danielle Lee-Ryder

Local international students have a strong national voice with Benjamin Poveda’s recent appointment to the Council of International Students Australia.

He is the first student from CDU to be selected as the National Secretary of the peak national body representing international students.

Benjamin was also recognised as the NT International Student of the Year at the 2018 Chief Minister's NT Export and Industry Awards last week.

Originally from Colombia, Benjamin said he hoped his presence would represent the university at a national level in a positive way to international students.

“Darwin is more than crocodiles and kangaroos,” he said. “Students don’t need to go to the big cities like Melbourne and Sydney to be successful.

“You can achieve what you want no matter where you are as long as you work hard. There is so much support for international students at CDU. It’s a great place to study and live.”

Previously, Benjamin studied finance and international trade at a Bogota university before moving to Australia to learn English.

“I wanted a different experience to the one that Colombians traditionally have in the United States,” he said.

“In Australia, and particularly Darwin, there’s so much diversity with a different language and culture on every neighbourhood corner.”

Benjamin said he believed direct flights to China would make CDU even more attractive to potential Chinese students.
