Project Coordinator, Bushfires Cameron Yates talks about fire management with Othusitse Lekok on Casuarina campus

Fire management partnership mooted between NT and Botswana

Othusitse “OT” Lekok will return to CDU from Botswana later this year as a PhD candidate, working on a thesis that will focus on the viability of transferring fire management techniques developed in Northern Australia to his southern Africa homeland.

OT accompanied a seven-person Government of Botswana delegation that visited Casuarina campus last month for a seminar with the Darwin Centre for Bushfire Research (DCBR) team, which explored collaborative possibilities in tropical savanna fire management based on DCBR research and North Australian burning programs managed by First Australians.

“It will be exciting for me to come to CDU at a time when we in Botswana need this kind of intervention in our fire management,” OT said.

“Savannas are key ecosystems in Botswana – home to people living in them and significant contributors to wildlife tourism, agriculture and biodiversity. The savannas of northern Botswana, however, are among the world’s most affected by wildfire.”

OT’s PhD research will be supervised by Professor in Fire Ecology Jeremy Russell-Smith.
