Animator makes a splash at film awards

A Charles Darwin University animator has won two peak industry awards for a music video set in an imaginary underwater world.

The 3D animation and multimedia developer Dan Hartney won awards for Best Music Video and Best Animation at the recent Capricornia Film Awards in Darwin.

Mr Hartney said that more than 5000 frames were used to create the plasticine-like computer animated world for Northern Territory folk singer Serina Pech’s “Not like them” music video.

“I wanted to make something that looked handmade,” he said.

“A lot of what I do involves keeping up to date with new techniques in animation.”

Mr Hartney said the video took about six weeks to create and that it was shot in his living room with a green screen during his spare time.

At CDU, he has created a range of animated resources for digital learning tools, including three Massive Open Online Courses.

The awards ceremony was held as part of the Darwin International Film Festival.
