‘Disaster chef’ gives cyclone cooking a whirlBy Katie Weiss A Territorian who can create culinary sensations from canned food has been dubbed the region’s first “disaster chef”. Northern Territory Emergency Services capability officer Peter Clouting won the recent TIO Cyclone Kit Cook Off, organised in partnership with 104.1 Territory FM, by impressing judges with his unique pasta and bean dish, followed by a dessert. Mr Clouting competed against three contestants during the competition at Casuarina Shopping Plaza, creating his winning dish from non-perishable items commonly found in a cyclone kit. Territory FM Mornings presenter Daryl Manzie said shoppers stopped to watch the competition to get some tips on how to prepare for the cyclone season. Mr Manzie broadcast live from the event and Skycity Darwin chef Steve Sweetman and Territory Taste magazine’s Anya Lorimer judged the competition. “The event provided an excellent opportunity to start a conversation with the public about being cyclone-prepared,” he said. |
