Apprentice Aimee top of the class

By Patrick Nelson

Apprentice hairdresser Aimee Sawtell has just taken another small step toward her ambition of becoming a hair dresser in the Australian Outback.

The Certificate III apprentice was named most Outstanding Student at Charles Darwin University’s beauty and hairdressing prize giving event in Alice Springs this week.

“I’m saving up for a red four-wheel drive,” said Aimee, who loves to go bush and to camp under the stars.

“Hairdressing is my ticket to the future. Once I’m qualified, I might take it to the road,” she said.

Aimee, who works at the Hair Today salon in Alice’s Yeperenye Shopping Centre, has just been handed the scissors after an extended period of time focussing on colouring.

“I’ve had plenty of practice at home,” she said.

Aimee is the second eldest in a family of five girls, all born and raised in the Red Centre, and all of who line up for a cut, colour and style every so often.

“I’m also interested in dermatology, so I may look at becoming qualified in skin care a little later on,” she said.

Asia Pacific College of Business and Law Dean Professor David Low congratulated Aimee and indeed all the prize winners.

“It’s my absolute pleasure to be able to send my message of congratulations to you,” Professor Low said.

“Celebrate and enjoy your next steps in your careers. It’s an important career to have and an important skill that the Territory needs moving forward.”

The prize winners: Hairdressing - VET in School Student of the Year – Kaleigh Rodger; Most Improved Student – Cherelle Williams; Outstanding Student Award – Aimee Sawtell.

Beauty - Student of Year (Cert III Beauty Services Apprentice) – Berenique Erasmus; Student of Year (Cert III Beauty Services) – Rosette Lerner; Student of Year (Diploma of Beauty) – Ella Adami.
