Hospitality graduates celebrate success

About 30 Charles Darwin University hospitality graduates joined staff for a walk down memory lane – and to raise a toast to the future – at an alumni celebration at Palmerston campus recently.

Hospitality Lecturer and event organiser Prad Chatterjee said the event recognised the contribution of students, celebrated their successes and strengthened industry partnerships.

“We had students from well over 10 years ago attend the event and reconnect with their fellow industry colleagues, lecturers and classmates,” Mr Chatterjee said.

“We thanked them for applying their knowledge and skills to their working lives and for establishing themselves in the Northern Territory’s hospitality industry.”

He said the graduates had successfully completed a Diploma of Hospitality Management after having completed a Certificate III in Hospitality, Cookery or Retail Bakery pathway.

Senior Culinary Arts Lecturer Jason Wilkes said it was great to see old faces and hear of the successes of past students.

Similarly, Culinary Arts Team Leader Robert Schwerdt said he was delighted that many of the Culinary Arts and Hospitality alumni had forged out careers in the Northern Territory.

One of the guests was 2017 Hospitality graduate Jenny Huang from the Retail Bakery pathway.

Now the Muffin Break Casuarina manager, Ms Huang said: “I am proud to have applied the skills that I learnt from my studies, which have helped me immensely towards my transition from a supervisor to shop manager. Without the support from CDU lecturers, I would not have made it,” she said.

Mr Chatterjee said that this inaugural hospitality alumni event had exceeded expectations and that he was optimistic that an even bigger event would be hosted at Palmerston campus in the future.
