Year 10s discover future career pathways

By Ellie Turner

More than 260 students from high schools across Darwin and Palmerston were given a taste of university subjects in various fields – including sciences, architecture, health, business and the arts – during Year 10 Discovery Day.

Student recruitment coordinator Tanya Weatherstone said the annual event gave the students an opportunity to get to know Casuarina campus and see the diverse range of high-quality courses on offer.

Activities included a visit to the moot court, experiencing the role of midwifery in aiding normal birthing and a bush walk to find out more about environmental science.

“We want students to become familiar with the campus and begin to feel like they are part of the university community so they can see CDU as part of their future,” Ms Weatherstone said.

“They need to start thinking about subject selection for the next two years of secondary school. Discovery Day helps students explore the sort of career they’re interested in pursuing.”

Year 10 Casuarina Senior College student Dray Thompson, whose ambition is to become a ranger, said he enjoyed physics demonstrations in the Exercise and Sports Science session.

“I could probably see myself here in the future,” he said.
