DSO tunes up for next concert

The next DSO concert is set for 24 October The next DSO concert is set for 24 October

The Darwin Symphony Orchestra's upcoming third MasterSeries concert draws its name from the title of Australian composer Elena Kats-Chernin's new flute concerto, “Night and Now”.

In an inspired discussion between DSO Artistic Director and Chief Conductor Matthew Wood and Australian virtuoso flautist Sally Walker, Matthew learnt that this giant of Australian composition was writing a new flute concerto for Sally.

As a result of the discussion, this concerto will have its world premiere in Darwin at 7.30pm on 24 October at the Darwin Convention Centre.

This program follows on from a 2014 concert in which the DSO performed movements from Elena Kats-Chernin's “Wild Swans”, accompanied by projected images of local artist Ray Reeves.

This year marks the 21st anniversary of Elena's settlement in Australia from her native Russia, and in this program the DSO will reunite her with some of her comrades in Dmitri Shostakovich's jazz inspired “Ballet Suite No. 1” and Alexander Borodin's heroic “Symphony No. 2 in B minor”.

“Night and Now” is part of the DSO’s 2015 MasterSeries in which it performs six world premieres of Australian composition, including Elena Kats-Chernin’s flute concerto, Cathy Applegate's new piano concerto and commissioned works by Ross Edwards, Iain Grandage, Kat McGuffie and Lachlan Skipworth under the baton of celebrated international conductor Matthew Wood.
