DSO to present The Diva & the BardThe Darwin Symphony Orchestra (DSO) will return indoors for its next performance when it presents The Diva & the Bard at the Darwin Convention Centre on 3 September. During the 2016 season the DSO has focused strongly on storytelling to commemorate the 400th anniversary of the death of William Shakespeare. No playwright has been set to music more than the Bard and in the upcoming concert the DSO will perform a selection of works that showcase the inspiration that one man has had on generations of artists and composers. The program will include Juliette’s glittering waltz song from Gounod’s Romeo and Juliet, Bernstein’s adaptation of Romeo and Juliet, Westside Story, and will present highlights from Verdi, Tchaikovsky, Purcell and Vaughan-Williams. This stellar concert will feature soprano Emma Matthews, who gave stellar performances of Verdi's Rigoletto in Darwin in 2012 and at Uluru in 2013. Emma Matthews is a highly acclaimed and awarded soprano, having received more Helpmann Awards than any other individual artist, nine Green Room Awards, the Mo Award and the Remy Martin Australian Opera Award. She is internationally in demand, embracing a wide repertoire including the Requiems of Mozart and Fauré, Mahler’s Symphony No. 2 and 4, masses by Poulenc, Villa Lobos, Haydn and Mozart, and Handel’s Messiah. Emma has performed with all the state opera companies and the major Australian symphony orchestras. The DSO will welcome the celebrated Australian conductor Matthew Coorey, who makes his debut with the DSO in this concert. The concert will begin at 7.30pm.
