Flamin’ trophy for innovative Alice team

The Tourism and Hospitality Central team was chuffed to receive the VET Faculty’s Flamin’ Award the other day, but their acceptance of the trophy has created an amusing unintended consequence.

“Our trophy cabinet was already full and there’s no room to display it,” said Team Leader Mike Keating.

“But luckily for us we are an innovative bunch so I’m sure we’ll cook up the perfect solution.”

The trophy, fashioned to resemble the Olympic torch, and featuring titanium flames that symbolise bright ideas, has circulated among various teams and individuals in the Top End over the past two years.

“We are very proud to bring the coveted trophy to Alice for the first time,” Mr Keating said.

“It’s in recognition of innovative practice, which in our case has led to improved results in the training cafe.”

Mr Keating said a VET development grant had given the team an opportunity to grow facilities and increase capacity to train students.

“After a lot of careful planning, we transformed an under-utilised space into a fit-for-purpose training area, equipped with four new commercial quality coffee machines.

“It has proven to be better for our students and better for our trainers.”

Mr Keating thanked the many individuals who had contributed to the development project. He also thanked Pro Vice-Chancellor VET Christine Robertson, and new Executive Director VET Strategy and Operations Ashar Ehsan, who presented the trophy.
