CDU scholar greets new Greek Orthodox Primate

By Andrew Hall

Greek and Hellenic Studies Associate Professor George Frazis was in Sydney last week to welcome the new Archbishop of the Greek Orthodox Church in Australia.

Dr Frazis initiated discussions with His Eminence Archbishop Makarios of Australia about a collaboration between St Andrews’ Theological School of Sydney – of which Archbishop Makarios is the incoming Dean – and CDU in the delivery online of Greek language units.

“It was a great honour for me to be able to welcome the new head of the Greek Orthodox Church in Australia,” Dr Frazis said. “And I’m excited at the possibility of sharing the online language teaching methods I have developed at CDU with a prestigious theological institution.”

Archbishop Makarios was born in Heraklion, Crete in 1973 and completed his elementary studies in his birthplace and at the Rizareios Ecclesiastical School of Athens.

He holds five postgraduate degrees from universities in Greece, the US and Australia, including a PhD from the Medical School of the University of Crete titled, “Cloning: Social, Ethical and Theological Components”.
