Greek language program celebrates milestone

By Katie Weiss

Staff and students have celebrated 10 years since Charles Darwin University launched its annual Greek In-Country language program.

Ties to Greece were further strengthened during this year’s program when Vice-Chancellor Professor Simon Maddocks accompanied 13 students and program coordinator Associate Professor George Frazis to Greece.

“The Greek In-Country language program is a great opportunity for students to experience Greek culture first-hand,” Dr Frazis said.

Students toured the country, visited museums and archaeological sites, and interacted with locals while completing a Greek Studies three-week intensive.

The group travelled from Kalymnos to Athens, Delphi, Meteora, Pella and the Greek Macedonian capital of Thessaloniki, and visited the School of Aristotle in Mieza.

At the University of Macedonia, CDU’s Head of the School of Creative Arts and Humanities Professor Brian Mooney gave a presentation, titled “Aristotle: valuable asymmetrical friendships”.

The Vice-Governor of Pella, Theodoros Theodoridis, was among Greek delegates who met the group during the program, along with the Mayor of Kalymnos, Ioannis Galouzis, and the Mayor of Almopia, Dimitris Mpinos.
