Expo wants hands raised to help in community

Charles Darwin University Student Ambassadors are asking staff and students to raise their hands and become involved in volunteer work in the community.

The students will hold a “Hands Up” Expo to celebrate National Student Volunteer Week on Wednesday, 16 August at Casuarina campus.

Student Ambassador co-ordinator Irta Rachman said the aim of the expo was to encourage students to be involved in their local community and find out about volunteering opportunities such as becoming a CDU Student Ambassador.

“Come along to the Hands Up Expo and discover many organisations, such as the RSPCA Darwin, Leukaemia Foundation, Bushfires NT, and Conservation Australia who need people to help with their good causes,” she said.

Fourth year Bachelor of Engineering Science/Master of Engineering student Nadia Craven said she enjoyed volunteering as a Student Ambassador and as the Young Engineers Australia campus co-ordinator throughout her studies with CDU.

“Volunteering within your community not only builds your confidence, but it is also a great way to meet people,” Nadia said.

“When I first started at uni I was quite shy until the student ambassadors approached me. I got some great advice from them based on their experience and now I can help new students and give back what they gave me.”

Ms Rachman said the event would have a party-like atmosphere and, as a bonus, would include the opportunity to learn swing dancing with local enthusiast Quito Washington.

The expo will run from 11am – 1pm in Boab Court.
