Community centre opens at The Heights, Durack

The $1.5 million community centre at The Heights, Durack residential subdivision has been opened by the Mayor of the City of Palmerston, Mr Ian Abbott.

The community centre is located on 2000sqm of land owned by CDU and where the Peet Group is establishing a new residential community, which is integrated with the university’s education precinct and with its other residential and commercial neighbours.

Mr Abbott was joined by CDU Vice-Chancellor Professor Simon Maddocks and Peet Group Regional Manager (WA, SA, NT) Paul Lakey for the official opening.

Speaking at the event Professor Maddocks said the complex was a great example of the breadth of CDU’s reach and involvement in the Northern Territory community and underlined the university’s role in the NT’s social development.

“This community centre will be a place of learning, but it will also be a place of community-building,” Professor Maddocks said. “A place where links that promote a sense of belonging and goodwill between individuals and groups can be developed and strengthened.”

The 370sqm centre was designed by local architects MKEA Architects and built by Thoroughbred Constructions Pty Ltd.

Initially, it will combine the sales and information centre for The Heights, Durack and a community arts precinct for the City of Palmerston. In time, Palmerston will take up the operation of the facility on behalf of the local community.
