CDU Nursing stalwart joins select group

By Danielle Lee-Ryder

University Fellow Janie Mason was officially appointed a Member of the Order of Australia (AM) at NT Government House last month.

The Hon Vicki O’Halloran AM, Administrator of the NT, conferred one of the Commonwealth’s highest honours on Ms Mason as part of the 2019 Australia Day Honours List.

The prestigious award recognised Ms Mason’s “significant service to nursing and the community of the Northern Territory”. Her contributions included service to the heritage sector, the trade union movement, aged care and being a donor to several organisations.

Ms Mason, who worked as a registered nurse, lectured in nursing at CDU. Starting at the university in 1983, Ms Mason was a Senior Lecturer in Nursing, Head of Nursing, Chair of the Academic Board and served for several years on the University Council. She currently volunteers as Curator of the CDU Nursing Museum.

Outside the university, Ms Mason had an illustrious career in the trade union movement as the first female President of the NT Trades and Labor Council. Her services to the union movement were recognised with a life membership of the National Tertiary Education Union and a Centenary Medal.

Ms Mason said she was honoured to join the select group of Australians who had been awarded for their outstanding contributions to society.
