First-time appointment music to his ears

By Andrew Hall

Retired CDU Confucius Institute (CI) Director and Music Professor Martin Jarvis OAM is the first ever non-Chinese person to be appointed as a Visiting Professor of Music by Anhui Normal University College of Music in Wuhu, Anhui Province, China.

Anhui Normal University is a partner institution in Charles Darwin University’s CI and also shares close academic links with CDU.

“The Letter of Appointment came as a complete surprise,” Professor Jarvis said. “I feel honoured and was absolutely delighted to accept the appointment . . . though I don’t yet know what it exactly entails.

“I have been visiting Anhui Normal University since 2012 – following the inauguration of the CI at CDU – and in mid-March I was there to participate in the setting up of a summer school exchange between Anhui and the Darwin Symphony Orchestra (DSO) in August.

“We agreed that up to 12 students of stringed instruments would come to Darwin to perform with the DSO in their 30th Anniversary Concert.”

Professor Jarvis retired late last month after 31-plus years’ service as a senior academic through the various incarnations of what is now Charles Darwin University.

“I have accepted the offer to maintain an office on Casuarina campus, which will enable me to continue my research and the supervision of my postgraduate students, and I’m very much looking forward to whatever the future brings,” Professor Jarvis said.
