Karen Deer: living the dream
Karen Deer: living the dream

VET graduate’s new life looks cruisy

After many years in the beauty therapy sector and with a plethora of industry qualifications that include a Certificate IV and a Diploma in Beauty Therapy, VET graduate Karen Deer is headed for the high seas.

Karen, who graduated with a Certificate IV in Training and Assessment last year, was one of 800 applicants this year for an all-expenses-paid course at one of the world’s most revered health and beauty schools, the Steiner Academy.

She recently found out that she was one of only 14 applicants worldwide to be accepted, and this month will fly to the UK to begin her three-week training at the academy headquarters in Watford, Middlesex.

After the training Karen will be deployed to a Norwegian Cruise Lines Caribbean cruise ship as manager of that ship’s exclusive Mandora Spa treatment centre.

“I’m absolutely thrilled to be going on this wonderful adventure,” Karen said. “I am grateful to all the VET staff at the CDU Waterfront campus for their help and encouragement.”

Karen said VET lecturer Chris Dixon made the course fun. “Working and studying in Darwin was a great experience,” she said.

Mr Dixon said: “Karen worked very hard and delighted in learning how to speak in public, plan training programs, prepare training sessions and design training aids.”
