Campus library better than ever

By Patrick Nelson

The Alice Springs campus library is back in business following a freak hail and rain storm that inundated the premises with water in June.

Librarian Alex Williams said that while the impact of the storm had been significant, there had been minimal damage to books and other resources.

“Basically the roof failed,” Ms Williams said.

“Once the storm hit we had water coming through the ceiling in most rooms including a major leak at the entrance to the computer lab.

“We managed to cover most items with tarps within a few minutes, but the carpet and some furniture was ruined and has been replaced.”

Ms Williams said the decision to replace the carpet prompted the full collection of 34,000 items to be housed for five weeks in the Desert Lantern Restaurant, which fortunately was in winter recess.

“This allowed us to maintain services with the exception of just a couple of days.

“This has been an unsettling episode, but on the upside we saw a community spirit among staff across the campus who pitched in during our hour of need.”
