One of Australia’s most celebrated medical research institutes will celebrate 30 years of pioneering health research, education and training this year.

From its headquarters in Darwin, the Menzies School of Health Research has conducted and reported research, and sought to translate the findings to make a difference to the lives of many in the Northern Territory and globally.

Beginning as a bold new vision to establish a dedicated health research centre in the NT to deal with health problems unique to this region, Menzies began its research efforts in January 1985. Early areas of research focus included heart disease, trachoma, hepatitis B, alcohol-related diseases, nutrition and infectious diseases.

Menzies Director Professor Alan Cass said the organisation planned to celebrate the people, partners and communities that had shaped the Menzies' story during this anniversary year.

“Menzies is an iconic Territorian institution, one that has a proud history of scientific discovery and public health achievement,” Professor Cass said.

“Many Territorians are still surprised to learn that in their own backyard they have an organisation that is leading the way in Indigenous and tropical health research. In many ways our evolution over 30 years to today, being an internationally recognised organisation, mirrors the growth of the Territory itself.”

“To mark the anniversary, we have developed resources and interactive materials, in addition to a range of anniversary events, to celebrate 30 years of research, innovation and education with the Territory community.”

Menzies has launched a dedicated anniversary website that includes an interactive achievements timeline, historical image gallery and video testimonials from foundation staff and key partners.
