Language matters at NAIDOC Week event

A prominent Northern Territory elder will headline an event at Casuarina campus about the importance of preserving Indigenous languages.

Senior Gupapuyngu woman Dr Waymamba Gaykamangu will deliver a special presentation “Matha Matters” about Yolngu languages as part of the NAIDOC Week event at the Northern Institute.

“Language is our intellectual property as well as our songline, clan designs and ceremony,” she said.

“We teach our children in Matha every day so that they can carry on our knowledges.”

Dr Gaykamangu grew up at Milingimbi, in West Arnhem Land and has been an educator since the 1970s.

She was the inaugural Yolngu Languages and Culture lecturer at CDU in 1994, and has worked as a teacher trainer, curriculum developer and researcher.

Guests at the event will have the opportunity to learn a few words of a living language from the Top End and hear about language development work underway at CDU.

The event will be at 2:30pm on Wednesday, 5 July at the Northern Institute, building Yellow 1, Level 2, Room 48.

NAIDOC Week 2017 celebrates the importance, resilience and richness of Indigenous Australian languages.
