‘Stylist to stars’ joins Alice hairdressing salon

By Patrick Nelson

A haircare industry professional who once styled for the stars has been appointed to run the Charles Darwin University hairdressing program in Alice Springs.

Wayne Elphick, a former salon owner who once won the Schwarzkopf Hairdresser of the Year award, said he was still as enthusiastic about the profession as he was when he started more than 20 years ago.

“Creating beautiful hairdressing is an ongoing goal of mine,” said the self-proclaimed perfectionist, who also once was the West Australian manager of a leading haircare company.

“A sound education in the basics is the key to excellence and client satisfaction,” he said.

“We will continue to train apprentices in Central Australia and students enrolled in school-based traineeships.

“I’m also looking forward to working with the salons and mixing with industry in Alice.”

Mr Elphick said he had participated in several bridal and cutting competitions throughout his career.

“There were a few big wins along the way, which were a big deal at the time,” he said.

“I ran a salon at an international luxury hotel in Perth, which accommodated a number of celebrities.

“Janet Jackson was one of my favourites. I’ve also styled for Elle McPherson, Judith Durham, Ita Buttrose, Collette Dinnigan and a few others whose names I can’t mention because of confidentiality clauses.”

Team Leader Linda Manning said she was delighted to welcome Mr Elphick to the Red Centre.

“He brings a wealth of experience, fresh ideas and a rich knowledge of current industry skills to the VET hairdressing team.”

Mr Elphick will play a leading hand in organising the Alice Springs Time to Shine event, where students showcase their skills at the end of the year.
