Vibrant art has it covered

By Ellie Turner

A Charles Darwin University PhD candidates’s dynamic artwork has featured on the cover of a popular arts and culture magazine.

Bronwyn Dann won a design competition with her “Wet Season Backyard: Darwin” for the latest edition of Off The Leash, which this month celebrated 10 years as the Top End’s premier free what’s-on guide.

Ms Dann said the piece explored her evolving relationship with Darwin since the city became her home seven years ago.

“It’s about the architecture, foliage and weather patterns of the tropics,” she said.

“I use the elevated, louvered house as a motif to capture a sense of what our shared visual understanding of ‘home’ means here.”

The work is one in a series of six, combining ink, watercolour and gouache drawings.

Off The Leash Managing Editor Roslyn Perry said the magazine partnered with sponsor Belle Property Darwin to run the competition, providing a unique opportunity for Territory artists.

“Bronwyn’s entry fit perfectly with our desire for a fabulous local cover for the milestone; we wanted to celebrate the art of our tropical home,” she said.

Ms Dann is working on a thesis titled “Harvesting Moonlight: A visual narrative of the history of the pearling industry in the North of Australia”.
