Thousands of people converged on Casuarina campus during Open Day to discover how Charles Darwin University is advancing our region through research, teaching and training, and partnerships.

The 4500-strong crowd enjoyed a jam-packed day of cultural activities, interactive workshops and free family entertainment, which included local band Skarlett and Bananas in Pyjamas for the kids.

Vice-Chancellor Professor Barney Glover said Open Day was a resounding success and a great opportunity not only for prospective students, but also for the Darwin community to see what CDU had to offer.

Budding tradespeople saw why CDU is consistently recognised as the NT's Training Provider of the Year with an impressive vocational education and training display on The Strand. Hands-on demonstrations included welding simulations, automotive spray painting, cherry-picker operation and carpentry.

CDU’s nationally and internationally recognised chefs kept the crowds well-fed, with live laksa cooking demonstrations, and muffin and crepe decorating, with plenty of samples along the way.

Pharmacy students taught visitors how to pack medicines using lollies, while visual arts lecturers led printmaking workshops, which saw many unique works created.

Various tours allowed visitors to explore the university’s hidden gems including gardens, art galleries, and the new North Australian Centre for Oil and Gas, giving prospective students and members of the community a taste of campus life.

For the first time ever, Open Day 2013 saw the introduction of the mobile application CDU Explorer Game, which challenged visitors to complete a quest, answering questions and completing challenges to win a swag of prizes. Catherine Capistrano, Jurse Salandanan and Trish Pini took out the $150 Casuarina Shopping Square vouchers, and Sara Zori won an iPad Mini and $50 iTunes credit.

Melanie Vrnak won the major prize, an Ultimate Study Pack including a MacBook Pro, Microsoft Office for Mac Home and Student 2011 and Beats by Dr Dre Headphones.
