A singing teacher with Charles Darwin University’s Centre for Youth and Community Music has soaked up the cultural riches of Italian opera at an exclusive summer school in picturesque Verona.

Territory rock-turned-opera singer Peta Bartley said the three-week course at the world-acclaimed Opera Viva had been the “opportunity of a lifetime”.

“The teachers are world-class and it is an incredible experience to study under them,” Ms Bartley said.

The Darwin soprano and vocal coach was the only Australian selected for the summer school, where just 20 students from across the world were selected to take part.

“It’s a program that offers young singers, stage directors and accompanists the opportunity to experience the musical and cultural riches of Italian opera through study and performance," Ms Bartley said.

She said she planned to help develop a strong opera scene in the Northern Territory with her newly developed skills.
