Smoking ceremony welcomes hundreds to O Week

By Katie Weiss

Almost 600 students from Australia and overseas recently attended O Week at Casuarina campus in preparation for the start of their academic year, which begins today.

A traditional smoking ceremony held by Larrakia Elders, academic-in-residence Bilawara Lee and Tony Lee wished luck to new and returning students who attended the week-long event.

Nursing student Melissa Peacock, from Darwin, said she had enrolled in the course this year after making the decision about six years ago to pursue a nursing career, with the birth of her son.

“I finally decided to bite the bullet and take the plunge,” Melissa said.

“The academic information sessions at O Week have been very informative, and have given me a reminder about why I am doing this course in the first place.”

Student Recruitment and Events Manager Marissa Briston said Orientation provided students with an introduction to campus life, their course requirements, the services available, and the opportunity to meet other students.

Orientation activities were also held at CDU’s various campuses and centres, including in Alice Springs, Melbourne and Sydney.
