Spray painter shows true colours

By Patrick Nelson

Automotive Refinishing Technology student Dean Huby has done the Territory proud in finishing fifth at the National Colour Matching competition in Sydney recently.

The home-grown fourth-year apprentice with Palmerston Smash Repairs was up against the best young colour matchers from Australia and New Zealand at the state-of-the-art training facility at Eastern Creek Raceway.

Competitors were required to match one solid colour and one metallic colour against a base panel.

“We had an hour for each task,” Dean said.

“In the solids we started with a lime green that had to be made into a darker green a bit like The Hulk, whereas in the metallic competition we worked with orange tones.”

Dean said points were also awarded depending on how well organised and efficient each competitor was, their workspace cleanliness, the way they treated equipment and adherence to safety protocols.
