Philadelphia top young citizen

Charles Darwin University student Philadelphia Hughes has been named Darwin’s Young Citizen of the Year in recognition of the positive contribution she has made to the local community.

The Bachelor of Psychological Sciences student received the Young Citizen of the Year award at Darwin’s Flag Raising and Citizenship Ceremony on January 26.

Regarded as an outstanding role model, Philadelphia said she regarded the award as “a great honour”.

“It was a surprise even to have been nominated but to win was absolutely amazing, especially against the high calibre of the other finalists,” she said.

“I really didn’t think I’d get it.”

Philadelphia, who is about halfway through her degree, said she was looking forward to the start of the academic year, which resumes today.

When not studying, she plans to continue her voluntary work with the youth mental health organisation Shout Out.

Philadelphia is also an Indigenous Student Ambassador for CDU.
