Schoolies gain head-start for higher studies

By Andrew Hall

More than 50 senior secondary students have gained a head-start in their university studies after taking part in a new program at Charles Darwin University.

Known as the Northern Territory Certificate of Education and Training Research Project B subject, the initiative allows students to apply for advanced standing for CDU’s mandatory academic literacy undergraduate units.

Charles Darwin School Scholars Program coordinator Sonya Mackenzie said the initiative assisted with a smooth transition from school to university.

“Research Project B aims to advance students’ academic readiness by building a culture of credible research and referencing, academic written skills, and confidence in the oral and visual presentation of research findings,” she said.

Students apply for recognition of these skills by giving an oral presentation of their research project to a panel of CDU academics, and a written report.

The students taking part in the program will earn 10 credit points and an exemption from taking one of two compulsory units in their undergraduate studies.
