Scholarships for Indigenous women in STEM

Two Charles Darwin University Bachelor of Engineering students have been awarded scholarships worth $5000 by Engineers Australia and government-owned corporation Territory Generation.

The Indigenous Engineering Diversity Scholarship was won by Rikki Bruce and the Female Engineering Diversity Scholarship was awarded to Shannon Fuller.

Shannon said that the scholarship would help support her as a woman pursuing a career in civil and structural engineering.

“It is recognition of the call for more women to join the industry, which was of course a factor in my own decision to apply for engineering,” Shannon said.

“It will assist with the costs directly associated with studying and I may also set some funds aside for any unexpected costs that may arise.”

Rikki, who is currently completing her final year thesis, is working with the Australian Navy and engineering company Serco to understand the cause of component failure with the intent to improve vessel system reliability over the life of the vessel.
