Staff blow away fundraising target

By Leanne Miles

Staff and students from across Charles Darwin University have raised more than $3000 in the “World Greatest Shave” that raises funds for Territorians who are affected by blood cancer.

Mark Barlow from the Office of Information Technology Management and Support, who lead “Team CDU” from Casuarina campus, said the day was a huge success.

Mr Barlow, who was diagnosed recently with non-Hodgkin lymphoma, said he took part in the event to build awareness after being diagnosed and to raise funds and promote research into the disease.

“The support from the team was incredible,” Mr Barlow said. “We surpassed our target of $2000.”

CDU hairdressing lecturers and students donated their time to colour and shave the hair of staff and any other brave community members at the event held on Palmerston campus.

Palmerston campus customer service operator Theresa Fillmore had her long locks shaved by hairdressing lecturer Jo-anne Summerhill.

Ms Fillmore, who lost her mother to cancer three years ago, said she had always wanted to become involved in the event and had grown her hair especially to take part this year.

She will donate her hair to “Wigs for Kids”, an organisation providing hair replacement systems and support for children who have lost their hair due to an illness such as cancer.
