A sports champion has praised a Charles Darwin University lecturer for inspiring him to achieve during his formative years.

This year’s NT Junior Sportsperson of the Year, Rhys Dowling, said he gained motivation from the lecturer’s advice to this very day.

The 19-year-old Australian squash champion graduated from his Certificate III in Fitness and a Certificate III in Sport and Recreation at CDU in 2012.

Rhys said lecturer Corrie DeWitt, who still works at CDU, motivated him to achieve both in the classroom and on the court.

“He taught me to just ‘keep doing what you’re doing, push yourself to the limits and never give up’,” Rhys said.

“It did motivate me at the time and it still motivates me now.”

Rhys encouraged high school students to enrol in the course if they were interested in gaining a career in sport.

“I would definitely recommend it. It’s a very good starting point if you’re looking at getting a career in sport,” he said.

Rhys currently lives in Queensland, but will return to Darwin in May to play in the Top End Open squash tournament.
