Staffers make a splash in Singapore

By Patrick Nelson

Charles Darwin University’s rising influence in south-east Asia has taken an unexpected twist, with four of our finest academics showing off their sporting prowess at the Masters Games in Singapore recently.

The awesome foursome comprised Pro Vice-Chancellor of the Faculty of Law, Education, Business and Arts Professor Peter Kell, Marilyn Kell (the Northern Institute), Jane Davies and Fran Richardson (both School of Health), all of whom have returned to the Territory with a bag of medals.

It was Jane’s debut performance at the annual Singapore Masters Swimming Championship Sprint.

“We did pretty well,” Jane said. “All the training and hard work has paid off.

“Peter won four gold medals, Marilyn and I won two each, and between the four of us we also collected 15 minor medals.”

Jane said the competition was ostensibly about fun and fitness, but some of the competitors took it pretty seriously at the same time.

“It was a phenomenal event that attracted competitors from Indonesia, the Philippines, Europe, the US and elsewhere,” she said.

“We will now turn our attention to the Australian Masters Nationals on the Gold Coast next year.”
