VC taps into Tango talent

By Robyn McDougall

Vice-Chancellor Professor Simon Maddocks revealed deeply hidden talents when he donned patent leather pumps and took to the dance floor at the recent Dancing with the Celebrities Gala Ball in Darwin.

Professor Maddocks, who before becoming Vice-Chancellor was best known as a specialist in animal breeding and biotechnology, accepted the invitation to be a celebrity dancer at the fund-raiser, even though he believed his skill level was low and his time to practise even lower.

But Professor Maddocks said he could not resist supporting the great work of the host organisation, Total Recreation NT.

“I was very lucky that I was partnered with a person who knew exactly what she was doing on the dance floor,” he said.

“My partner, Margaret McGregor, had the impressive skill of making it look like I was leading while she was in total control at all times.”

The partnership clearly was effective with the pair taking the title of Tango Champions.

“It was a lot of fun, but next time I will make sure that I have more practise sessions before I have to perform in front of 300 people,” Professor Maddocks said.
