A Central Australian teenager is reviewing her gap-year travel plans after winning a $5000 voucher in a Charles Darwin University competition for Year 12 students.

CDU recently announced on its Facebook page that Centralian Senior College graduate Candice Henry was the lucky winner of the Charles Darwin University End Break Begin Competition.

The excited 18-year-old said it was the first time that she had won anything.

“I screamed so loudly I nearly broke the speaker on my phone,” she said upon hearing the news.

Candice, who has been studying for a Certificate IV in hospitality as part of her Senior School Certificate, said that for the past three years she had been planning to celebrate the end of her schooling with a trip to Phuket.

“I might now just look into where else I could go,” she said.

“I haven’t travelled since we went to New Zealand when I was 11. Maybe Phuket, but I have family in New Zealand so I could use the voucher to see them and I’d like to go to the Soundwave Festival in Adelaide too.”

Candice said her art teacher had encouraged her to enter the online competition, which asked participants to answer a set of simple questions.

The competition asked students who were about to “end” Year 12 if they fancied taking a “break” before they “begin” further studies.

“Basically I just had to say what I wanted to use (the voucher) for and submit it,” she said.
“I thought ‘why not’, entered it, then forgot all about it.”
