Aspiring sparky plugs into energy sector

Working as an electrician can be a hot and humid business in Darwin, but Emerson Nieva says it’s a small price to pay for doing what he loves.

The Filipino-born Territorian will be one step closer to his dream job once he graduates from his pre-apprenticeship electrotechnology course at a Charles Darwin University graduation ceremony on Friday.

“Everyone minds the heat, but I really enjoy this work,” Emerson said.

His talent was recognised by electrical engineering contractor SJ Electrics, which recently hired him to assist in installing lights and air-conditioning at the Woolworths Supermarket at the new Gateway Shopping Centre in Palmerston.

The shopping centre is set to open in 2017 and is one of the biggest developments in Palmerston.

“It was a very big job, but whenever I walk through the shops I will always remember that I helped to build it,” Emerson said.

“I like working with my hands, and how the work is always different each day.”

CDU will hold two graduation ceremonies for hundreds of Higher Education and Vocational Education and Training graduands on Friday at the Darwin Convention Centre.

The Career Start pre-apprenticeship course at CDU is run in collaboration with Youthworx NT.
