Student joins global network of young scientists

By Katie Weiss

A Charles Darwin University student has joined a global network of young scientists that aims to strengthen disaster risk reduction policies and practices around the world.

Master of Emergency and Disaster Management student Angelo Trias was selected recently to become a Young Scientist with the international group, Integrated Research on Disaster Risk.

Angelo moved to Darwin from the Philippines in 2015 to study and said the Young Scientist program would support his research into the organisational network behind disaster risk reduction projects in the Asia Pacific area.

“My involvement in the program will further enable me to support the Philippine Government’s Office of Civil Defense in strengthening the capacity of its civil defence volunteers,” Angelo said.

He said the program also would allow him to connect with a network of professionals and practitioners, access academic and research support, and take part in disaster risk reduction training and workshops.

Angelo received an Australia Awards Scholarship from the Australian Government to undertake postgraduate studies at CDU.
