Entries open this month for the 26th annual Northern Territory Literary Awards, a competition designed to recognise the Territory’s most talented writers.

The awards are intended to inspire the story-tellers of tomorrow and to cultivate a prosperous creative writing industry within the NT.

Divided into six categories (short stories, travel short stories, poetry, youth, essay and a separate category especially for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders) the competition aims to attract and award authors from a variety of different genres, with cash prizes for the winners of each category.

Director of the Northern Territory Library, Jo McGill said she hoped CDU students would apply for one category in particular.

“The essay competition has been designed with CDU students in mind as we’re sure they must be very well-practised in writing them.

“The essays need to be in some way related to the Territory and under 3000 words, but other than that writers have total freedom,” Ms McGill said.

Entries open 9 October 2009 and close on 31 January 2010 and can be made online W: www.ntl.nt.gov.au. More information about the awards can also be found on this website.
