Microsoft Office 365

Microsoft Office 365 is being introduced to provide the flexibility that CDU staff and students demand from their CDU email. It allows:

  • anywhere access to your CDU email across computer, phone, and other smart devices, so users can stay in contact anywhere, at anytime
  • the ability to save your files on the go using OneDrive for Business
  • you to work anywhere using the online range of the Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel and PowerPoint).

In addition to Exchange Online, staff and students are provided with five licences for the Microsoft Office Suite 2016 as part of the Microsoft Office 365 package.

Note: Check out the first drop down panel below titled, "who is eligible for Office 365?"

Office 365 is freely available to the following only:

  • CDU employed staff
  • Menzies employed staff
  • CDU enrolled students

If you are unsure, please contact the ITMS Service Desk on (08) 8946 6600 to confirm.

Please note:

  • Eligibility ceases along with employment/enrolment. Once your account with CDU (staff/students) ends, your licence for the Office 365 packages will expire (please keep a record of any previous licences you may have had prior to installing Office 365 products).
  • Should you already have a Office 365 license from somewhere else, it is possible that you will not see all the applications you are entitled to, such as Publisher and Access, until you use your CDU account.

As part of the ongoing improvement to IT services, CDU in cooperation with Microsoft, have negotiated to offer and support a more robust, stable, accessible, and consistent email service which includes:

  • increased mailbox size (50GB per user)
  • improved speed of delivery for emails
  • increased redundancy and disaster recovery
  • greater mobility and connectivity options.

Microsoft Office 365 has many features which makes conventional email more accessible and flexible for CDU staff and students. In addition, Office 365 also offers several features to the advantage of faculties and staff. Some of the highlights include:

  • increased availability - with online storage, emails have a 99.99% uptime, providing CDU staff and students have a reliable network/data connection.
  • flexibility - using a web-based interface, emails will be available on any device that has a network connection and a web browser.
  • email Protection (SPAM/Virus protection) - email protection works to block more than 99% of spam, viruses, worms and other harmful content.
  • more email capacity - 50Gb per mailbox compared to the 1Gb currently offered.
  • better mobile support for all smart devices - Office 365 products and licences cover all major devices ranging from smartphones to personal laptops.
  • Office 365 Licences - CDU staff and students are provided with 5 x Office 2016 licences as long as you are a current staff or student. Which means that you are free to install the local software on your personal devices.**

Please note: both CDU staff and students are free to consume the five licences at their own discretion, however ITMS cannot provide troubleshooting or assistance on personal devices.

Clutter is a feature of the new email environment that learns the way you manage your mailbox and assists you in sorting low priority email into a folder to keep your inbox free from clutter. While the system learns your habits, you may need to keep an eye on the Clutter folder, in case more important messages are directed there inadvertently.

There are a couple of ways in which you can aid Clutter to make the learning process simpler:

  • For items in the Clutter folder you would like put back in your inbox – simply right click and move to the inbox, or drag the message to the inbox.
  • For items in inbox that are Clutter - simply right click and move to the Clutter folder, or drag the message to the clutter folder.

If at any point you would like this feature turned off, please follow the steps below:

  1. Follow the steps at the beginning of this page to sign in to Outlook Online (webmail).
  2. Then, go to Settings  > Mail > Automatic processing > Clutter.
  3. Untick 'Don't separate items identified as Clutter'
  4. Click Save.

Note: The Clutter folder will remain visible in Outlook after you turn off Clutter feature. Outlook Online has more options when it comes to managing clutter. Click the gear Icon and search for Clutter to learn more.
