How to use VPN at CDU

What is VPN?

VPN stands for Virtual Private Network and it creates an encrypted link between your computer and the CDU network. If you are off campus, it is like you are plugged into a network port on campus. CDU uses Cisco AnyConnect as the VPN client and it is installed on all CDU computers.

When to use VPN

Corporate application, such as Callista and Ascender pay, reside in a restricted area of the CDU network. Before you can use these applications you need to access this restricted area by using the Cisco AnyConnect VPN Client. You can also use the Cisco AnyConnect Client to access the normal CDU network when off campus.

How to use Cisco AnyConnect VPN

Connecting VPN

To access Cisco AnyConnect Client click the icon on the Windows Taskbar

A Cisco AnyConnect login window will appear where you click the Connect button (1).

You will then get a login dialogue box where you enter your email address and password. Then press OK (2)

You will then get a message telling you that the VPN session is being established.

Note If you are off campus you will get another window asking for your MFA passcode.

For more information on MFA and setting it up see CDU MFA

To indicate that the VPN is connected and Icon with a lock appears on the Taskbar.

Note: The Cisco AnyConnect will automatically disconnect after 8 hours.

How do I connect to the CDU Network using VPN?

Note: You only need to install VPN on your personal computer if you needed to connect to VPN when you are on campus.

Once you are connected to the Internet you need to use VPN to connect your computer to the CDU network to access systems such as Callista and Ascender pay.

If you are using a CDU device you will already have a Cisco AnyConnect VPN which you will be able to use. If you are on a personal device, instructions to set up VPN are below.

MFA and VPN

Recently ITMS has added MFA to the VPN connection process. This means that if you are off campus and have entered your username and password. You will get a new window that pops up and asks for your MFA passcode.

This is the same one you use to access the Portal when off campus.

Once you have entered the passcode and clicked Continue, you will be connected as normal.
For more information on MFA and setting it up see CDU MFA

If you need to connect to your network drives from off campus please contact the ITMS Service Desk on 6600.

NOTE: Warning to VPN users who use Approve-Deny MFA method
If you use the "Approve-Deny" method of MFA with the AnyConnect VPN client. Once you have entered your username and password and clicked "OK" there is no indication that an "Approve-Deny" message has been sent to you authentication device and it might appear that the VPN has frozen. This is not the case, it is waiting for you to "Approve" the connection on your authentication device. Once "Approved" on your device the VPN will connect as normal.

Using VPN is about making CDU systems more secure. It provides another layer of security to protect CDU's data.

NOTE: If you use the "Approve-Deny" method of Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) with the AnyConnect VPN client. Once you have entered your username and password and clicked "OK" there is no indication that an "Approve-Deny" message has been sent to your authentication device, and it might appear that the VPN has frozen.

(Cisco AnyConnect waiting for approval)

This is not the case, Cisco AnyConnect is waiting for you to "Approve" the connection on your authentication device. Once "Approved" on your device, the VPN will connect as normal.
