Charles Darwin University will further strengthen ties with the Greek community when the university welcomes the Mayor of Kalymnos to Casuarina campus next week.

Greek and Hellenic Studies Coordinator Associate Professor George Frazis said Ioannis Galouzis’s visit would extend many years of mutual goodwill between CDU and the Greek communities in Darwin and Kalymnos.

“We will welcome Mr Galouzis in the spirit of Darwin’s sister city relationship with Kalymnos, but also in the context of the scholastic bonds that CDU has developed with Greek academia, including the University of the Aegean,” Dr Frazis said.

“Some years ago we received (former mayor) Georgios Roussos to the campus in what was described at the time as an important moment in the maturing relationship between CDU and the Greek communities of Darwin and Kalymnos.

“We are grateful that the Mayor of Kalymnos has been a strong advocate of Hellenic Studies at CDU and of the In-Country Study Program to Greece.”

Dr Frazis said the delegation, also comprising Kalymnian councillors and several Greek journalists, would witness Darwin’s showcase of Greek food, culture and entertainment at the Glenti this weekend.

“CDU will be active at the Glenti promoting and raising funds for the Greek Studies Program and the Guardians of the Greek Language and Culture at CDU.”

Dr Frazis said CDU this year, for the first time, had contributed an “academic component” in the lead-up to Glenti.

“We hosted the Hellenic Cultural Week, which featured an exhibition of Byzantine Art and several public lectures,” Dr Frazis said.
