Charles Darwin University is about to launch a “Wellness Centre” that will be accessible to the whole community.

The former psychology clinic, which is located at Building Green 5, off Lakeside Drive, Casuarina campus, has expanded its services.

College Manager of Health and Human Services Gus Diaz said the centre would help people in several ways.

“Some of the new services include a cardiovascular health check, health and fitness assessments, body composition, sleep quality, and social work assistance and supervision,” he said.

“It’s priced well below the market; it’s affordable and accessible to everyone. It’s looking at helping people with their mental, physical and social wellbeing.

“Previously, the facility was focussed on clinical psychology. We will still offer this service that includes assessments and cognitive training, but we are also focusing on exercise, healthy body and social wellbeing.”

CDU will launch the Wellness Centre officially on Saturday 18 May between 8am and 12 noon with free family-oriented activities, markets and three fun runs.

Mr Diaz said it would be free to register for the one kilometre, three kilometre and five kilometre fun runs with the first few hundred participating to receive a branded water bottle.

“Yes, it’s on election day, but come along and have some fun before you vote,” he said.

CDU Student Association (CDUSA) has been involved in organising the activities. Local university sports and cultural clubs will offer food and hold demonstrations.

CDUSA Secretary Ali Dhirani said there would be lots for fun for kids.

“We will have coffee and delicious food for sale, a DJ, face painting, water slides and a range of demonstrations from sports such as rugby, cricket, badminton and table tennis,” he said. “It’s great to partner up in this initiative.”
