Social media presents enormous opportunities for engaging and collaborating with key stakeholders in evaluation projects. It has the potential to be a tool for data collection, a forum for communities of practice, and a means of communication for commissioning organisations, evaluation practitioners and beneficiaries. Drawing on early lessons from a research project about how social media can be used for health promotion, this presentation will explore issues to be considered for practitioners wishing to use social media in evaluation.

Marita Hefler is a Research Fellow in the Wellbeing & Preventable Chronic Disease Division at Menzies School of Health Research. She is a qualitative researcher with a particular interest in social inequality in public health, and has led several evaluations of public health projects in both Australia and overseas. Currently she leads a National Health & Medical Research-funded project to investigate how social media can be used effectively for Indigenous tobacco control.
