Abstract: Chronic undernutrition leading to linear growth failure in the first 1000 days of life has a profound impact on child morbidity and mortality, and long term implications for increased risk of chronic disease in adulthood. Despite this, the causes and mechanisms of child ‘stunting’ are poorly understood. I will describe the results of a prospective longitudinal cohort study conducted in SE Asia and outline three ongoing RCTs, and show preliminary results of a pilot cross sectional survey undertaken in a NE Arnhem community.

Biography: Bev is an infectious diseases physician and researcher at the Peter Doherty Institute, Melbourne, and an Honorary Hot North Fellow. She has extensive experience in translational research in maternal and child health in low-middle-income settings, including in the areas of malaria and hookworm infection, antenatal and infant anaemia, and determinants of child growth and development.
